The Geek’s Take

Trend Micro’s Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 provides a full and complete array of protection from standard malware threats like rootkits, worms, and trojans, along with guarding you from online threats too.  Some nice add-ons like 5GB of online storage, social networking protection, and advanced parental controls make this an enticing option but a lack of weekend phone support and a tendency to hog system resources keep Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 just outside the reach of an Editors’ Choice.

Protection

Trend Micro’s Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 combines Titanium Antivirus+ and Titanium Internet Security, meaning that not only will be you be protected from the tradional viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, rootkits, and all other malware, but you’ll also be protected when surfing the web from online attacks, helping to keep your identity and other critical data secure. Email protection from phishing attacks and a spam filter are included as well, as is a unique social media protection which highlights hinky looking links on Facebook and Twitter and scans your pages for possible privacy concerns.

Multiple layers of protection don’t mean much without a good, thorough scan to catch issues. Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 provides a traditional scheduled or on demand scan, boot up, and real-time scan, keeping malware from taking up root in your system in the first place. When it’s done scanning, Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 provides a full and customizable report of its findings.

Performance

Antivirus programs take up a lot of your system’s resources and can even choke an underpowered PC, harming overall system performance.  Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 did not do very well in our performance metrics, sucking up a whopping 93MB of RAM at idle and 115MB during a scan. Though these numbers are not outrageous when compared to the others in our roundup, they pale in comparison to our Editors’ Choice Webroot SecureAnywhere which just dominated these scores. What does this mean? Not much if you’re rocking a newer system with 8GB+ of RAM, but if your PC is a few years older with fewer resources, Titanium Maximum Protection could slow down your overall performance.

Webroot Norton Trend Micro
Memory Usage (Idle) 3.2MB 23.9MB 93.8MB
Memory Usage (Scan) 17.5MB 131MB 115.3MB

One metric where Trend Micro fares a bit better was scan time, clocking in at just over 37 minutes, second overall in our roundup, though a snail’s pace compared to Webroot’s 1.35 minute score.

Add-Ons/Features

Download Trend Micro Titanium Internet SecurityTrend Micro’s Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 offers a handful of unique bonuses and add-ons worth noting. We’ve mentioned a few in earlier sections, and full lists can be found in our comparison chart and the product page on Trend Micro

  • Social networking protection - Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 scans your social media feeds, highlighting safe links in green and potentially malicious links in red for your protection. It also scans your Facebook page for possible privacy concerns and alerts you to its findings
  • Parental Control – set online time limits, limit access to certain sites or programs and much more with extensive parental controls
  • 5GB of online storage – for backing up your most critical data
  • Protection for up to 3 PCs, Macs, or Android
  • Secure Erase – like a shredder for virtual files, Secure Erase permanently removes sensitive data from your system.

Support

Trend Micro offers the standard avenues from support – chat, phone, and email - with their Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 software that we’ve come to expect. The standard phone support with consumer products is only available Monday – Friday 8am – 11pm EST though chat support is available 7 days a week.  If that worries you, a premium level of support is also available for an extra $29.99 which provides full 24/7 support. This is a nice addition although we’d prefer to see it standard.

Value

At an $89.99 MSRP, Trend Micro’s Titanium Maximum Protection 2013 is the most expensive solution in our roundup. But fear not, like most software companies tend to, Trend Micro almost always provides discounts and offers of some type to lower that price, rendering the MSRP pretty meaningless. We were able to secure an offer of 45% off, redeemable right here, which eases the pain a bit. For the $49.99 discounted price, we feel pretty satisfied with what you get and the level of protecting that this solution provides, though we do wish the 5GB of online storage was a little more generous.
